Jehovah isn't real. As for the the elders, they can't do anything if he keeps his mouth shut. If he caves in & admits, they'll probably just read him a few scriptures & tell him not to answer up for a month.

A better way of doing it, with regards to the 'God' question. If you're a theist or deist, please answer this question.
by Psychotic Parrot inwhy are you a theist or a deist?
please give any or all reasons why without resorting to a god of the gaps argument.
that is the only condition i am making, since in my (& presumably every other atheist's) opinion, a god of the gaps argument simply isn't convincing enough to demonstrate that there is a god, only that there might be a god.. thank you.. p.s.

I'll just reply to all of those in one go (with the one exception below) to be quicker. The trouble with these threads when i make them is that they're primarily aimed that those who believe that science proves God, you know the type of people i mean, the people who really do want to force their beliefs on others, & there are plenty of them on this message board. But then ironically, when i make threads like these, very few of those people ever post in them, & in this particular thread i don't think there have been any such people. I don't mind the more reasonable believers coming in here & posting, they & i do have plenty to talk about, but the reality is that i have no quarrel with them. I'm not sure where to go from here really.
BurnTheShips,
I understand now. You have a lot of life to live, PP. I hope it is good for you.
As patronising a statement as that is, i don't disagree with it. But age can only tell you so much about someone. It may explain my temperament & poor communication skills but it tells you very little about what i know & how i've lived. Like many here, i was brought up in the WTS, a learning experience if ever there was one in & of itself, but i've also spent much of my life so far in a very multi-cultural & rather troubled part of the country (the UK), i'm far from unlived in the religious sense. I went to school & hung out with Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Muslims, Catholics, J-dubs, Pagans & atheists (notice that atheists are the only ones that don't require capitalisation), etc. I've been exposed first hand to more than just WTS thinking, my parents were not particularly strict & did little, if anything, to censor my information & associates. I'm relatively uninitiated when it comes to the New Age type stuff though, but i learn fast. (By the way, am i okay in lumping all of the non-organised-religious spiritual stuff under that banner, as generally all such thinking nowadays will be a modern version of ancient spiritual ideas, which is kind of what New Age is isn't it?).
EDIT: Ooh, this is post number 607 for me!

White Dove,
I'm not very familiar with Paganism, though i was under the impression that Wicca wasn't a subset of Paganism, as i was corrected by a Wiccan once in the past for labelling it as such. The whole nature = God thing is pantheism & is thus not something i would try to argue against, but i've already made my feelings clear on how i feel about the usage of the word God in such a context, but then i guess i was born a little late to make that complaint to Pagans, they've been around a lot longer than i have. I'm not sure how much evidence means in Paganism or Wicca, but certainly to claim that God explains nature or nature explains God is verging on the 'God of the gaps' area of things, but like i said, i'm not sure if that's the way that Pagans or Wiccans look at things.
VoidEater,
I would offer that you are intently looking for something that does not exist
Exactly my feelings on the nature of this type of God, it probably does not exist, but it is not i who is looking for it, there just happen to be millions, maybe billions of other people who are insisting to me & other atheists that it (or as they often put it "He") exists.
but that other models of Divinity are around
Such as? Or are you referring to pantheism & your beliefs, etc?

VoidEater,
My feeling on the matter is that were God to genuinely exist, in any form, then none of those activities, or any other, transcendent though some of them may be, would be a way of reaching God. Those activities are ultimately, & at their core, very natural & down to earth human processes & i don't think a being such as God would be reachable through such means, not really. Those who claim to find God through such activities are in my opinion more likely finding their inner selves than God. But i suppose one could argue that God is our inner self, but i would call that yet another misuse of the word God.
If God really exists, then i doubt we could ever do more than infer it's existence through some highly detailed mathematical process, but even that would probably not satisfy everyone, & it would be particularly disappointing for those who feel that God is someone with whom one can have a relationship. As for me, i'm undecided on whether or not it would satisfy my curiousity, but i suppose i'll cross that bridge if i ever come to it.
As for the activities you've mentioned, i've tried some of them, but never for the purpose of finding God.

littlebird,
Very well, but i should point out one thing, i used to believe in Him, & He never helped me out then. Also, my family all still believe in Him, but He has never done anything for them. He still plays favourites as far as i can see.
Catch you later!

Mad Dawg,
What activities? Anyway, the preaching/condemning thread is thata way >>>
I am not asking for favours from God, i am simply asking why He plays favourites & why some who don't believe in Him are given these magic revelations & others are not. All i want is some good evidence, then we can talk about favours.
And i don't see how i am dishonouring God, i am simply calling it as i see it, what could be more honourable than that?

littlebird,
Fair enough, but since you list God helping you as one of the primary reasons you believe in Him, how are the rest of us supposed to even believe in Him in the first place if He won't help us?
Feel free to get back to me on that one tomorrow if you feel like it, thanks.
